Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Department of Anesthesiology at Stony Brook University Medical Center. We are a dynamic department and our faculty are committed to making resident education our first and foremost priority.
As Residency Program Director, I work with and for the residents. A resident’s success is my success and that guides my every decision as the Residency Program Director.
My interest in medical and resident education began very early in my career. I have been the Director of Medical Student Education for our department for 18 years and Vice Chair for Education for the past 5 years. Before being appointed Residency Program Director this fall, I served as the Associate Residency Program Director for 9 years. I love to teach and have been fortunate to be the recipient of 22 teaching awards on departmental, institutional and national levels.
Our department’s goal is to produce residents that excel both clinically and academically. There is an abundance of challenging cases at our institution, so graduates of our program demonstrate clinical expertise in all areas of anesthesia management.
Our didactic program is ambitious, pushing residents to mastery of the profession. The program features protected nonclinical academic time that includes lectures, keyword sessions, case discussions, problem-based learning discussions, written board reviews, journal clubs, airway workshops, OSCE prep, Basic Exam prep, mock oral exams, simulator sessions and time for quality improvement projects. All these activities prepare the resident to:
In summary, we teach a lot, we teach in a lot of different ways, and we provide a high volume and variety cases to learn from. When our graduates leave Stony Brook, they make us proud, because their success is our success.
