Welcome to the Division of General, Geriatric and Hospital Medicine at SUNY Stony Brook. I invite you to browse our website to learn more about our ACGME-accredited geriatric medicine fellowship program as well as our faculty’s interests and expertise.
The Division consists of physicians and allied health staff with diverse academic interests, all of whom are dedicated to providing patient-centered, evidence-based medical care in a clinical environment supported by education and research. We care for patients in a wide variety of clinical settings (hospital, outpatient, home care, assistive living and teaching nursing homes). Last academic year, Stony Brook faculty and allied health professionals in the Division provided almost 55,000 inpatient and over 25,000 outpatient visits. Faculty members at both the Northport VAMC and Stony Brook teach medical students in Introduction to Clinical Medicine, Medicine in Contemporary Society, the Medicine Clerkship and the Ambulatory Clerkship and supervise Internal Medicine residents in inpatient and outpatient settings.
Our Division includes key clinical, administrative and educational leaders within the Department of Medicine, including the Vice Chair for Education and Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs. We hold clinical expertise in primary care and consultative medicine, hospital medicine, “transitional care,” and geriatric medicine. We promote healthful lifestyles for patients in our practice through innovative programs like “Enhanced Geriatric Care” and a Patient Centered Medical Home. We similarly offer comprehensive management of the medical needs for hospitalized patients, offering a BOOST program for older patients on multiple medications and dual management programs (e.g., medicine-orthopedics). Faculty research interests include Falls Prevention, Teaching Health Literacy, and the Role of Electronic Medical Records in Improving Quality of Care. The Division hosts a well-established ACGME-accredited one-year Geriatric Medicine Fellowship.
