Welcome to the Division of General, Geriatric and Hospital Medicine at SUNY Stony Brook. The Division consists of a group of doctors and allied health staff with diverse interests and expertise, all of whom are dedicated to providing patient-centered, evidence-based medical care in a clinical environment supported by education and research. The Division hosts an ACGME-accredited one-year Geriatric Medicine Fellowship. Several faculty members within the Division hold key clinical, administrative and educational leadership roles within the Department of Medicine. We have clinical expertise in primary care and consultative medicine, hospital medicine (including inpatient care and preoperative consultation), “transitional care,” and geriatric medicine. We care for patients in a wide variety of clinical settings, including hospital, outpatient, home care, assistive living and teaching nursing homes. Last academic year, Stony Brook faculty and allied health professionals in the Division provided almost 55,000 inpatient and over 25,000 outpatient visits. We promote healthful lifestyles for patients in our practice through counseling and educational initiatives. We care for patients with chronic medical illnesses, particularly vulnerable elders, for whom we offer a specialized multidisciplinary “Guided Care” program. We also offer comprehensive management of the medical needs for hospitalized patients. Faculty research interests include Falls Prevention, Teaching Health Literacy, and the Role of Electronic Medical Records in Improving Quality of Care.
