Overview

Elizabeth Roemer is currently the Associate Director of Research for the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine; she has worked at SUNY Stony Brook for over thirty years. Ms. Roemer joined Stony Brook’s Department of Anatomy in 1984, where she completed research for her master’s thesis and worked as a research scientist. Although she began her career as a bench scientist, her responsibilities progressed to significant research, personnel, grant and budgetary administrative duties over the years. Ms. Roemer worked in the Department of Pathology from 1989 until 2010 where she functioned both as a biomedical researcher and laboratory manager, and in later years, research director. Through her research and tenure as the Acting Director of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program she extensively collaborated with colleagues from all areas of the Stony Brook campus, including clinicians in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University, as well as faculty and staff from multiple departments in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences; Engineering and Applied Sciences; Dentistry; and Marine and Atmospheric Sciences.

In addition, Ms. Roemer has mentored numerous individuals during the developmental stages of their scientific careers, ranging from clinical fellows and post-doctoral associates, medical and graduate students, to undergraduate and high school students. Integrating these mentees into ongoing research projects required not only bench skills, but the ability to work in small groups and one-on-one with people whose backgrounds consisted of entry level to advanced knowledge. In this role, Ms. Roemer demonstrated an ability to recruit and hire people appropriate for specific research groups, and to coordinate the roles and interactions of varied participants. Ms. Roemer credits her many years in the lab with her fundamental strength in biomedical science and translational research. She gained additional experience coordinating multiple projects and integrating individuals into diverse research enterprises, making her uniquely qualified to handle the demands of diverse and complicated projects. Her current role requires her to maintain communication between investigators (or co-investigators) and the various university service providers with which they collaborate; she also assists in data analysis and preparation of publications and presentations.
