Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Pediatrics at Stony Brook Medicine.

For decades, the Department of Pediatrics at Stony Brook Medicine has been committed to providing outstanding pediatric care for infants, children and adolescents, carrying out cutting-edge research to advance children’s health and educating the next generation of pediatricians and pediatric specialists. In order to build upon this strong tradition, to provide the unique services and safe environment that pediatric patients deserve, and to better meet the needs of our region, we created Stony Brook Children's Hospital in 2010.

As the first and only children’s hospital in Suffolk County, Stony Brook Children’s ensures that children and families have access to state-of-the-art pediatric services close to home. Currently, we have more than 180 pediatric trained physicians specializing in 30 pediatric specialties, which means that we have the expertise to handle just about any type of medical condition affecting kids, from the typical bumps and bruises of childhood to the most complex diagnoses including cancer treatment, organ transplant and trauma. As the home of a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, state-designated Burn Center, inpatient pediatric psychiatric unit and oncology service, we are able to take care of the sickest patients in our region.

We also continue to make significant investments in our clinical programs. Over the years, we have built a state-of-the-art NICU; a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department; a pediatric cardiology imaging laboratory; a pulmonary function laboratory; the largest minimally invasive surgery program for children in Suffolk County; a highly specialized pediatric anesthesiology team; an adolescent psychiatry program and so much more.

And, in late 2018, thanks to the support of the Knapp Swezey Foundation and many generous donors from the community, Stony Brook Children's will have a new 71,500-square-foot home in a state-of-the-art 150-bed Hospital Pavilion.  This new location will feature single patient rooms, family suites with private sleep and bathing areas, a Ronald McDonald Family Room, playrooms and teen relaxation spaces.  It will also expand the pediatric research program at Stony Brook Medicine.  The hospital will also house separate units for oncology, adolescent medicine and intensive care, as well as the general pediatrics unit and pediatric procedure suite.  Understanding that children are not small adults, and their care must reflect their unique physical, emotional and developmental needs from infancy through adolescence, this new hospital is being designed with children and their families in mind.

In addition to our commitment to clinical care, an essential mission of Stony Brook Children’s is to train the next generation of doctors. Our outstanding medical school attracts the brightest students in the country, and our residency and fellowship programs offer superb opportunities for training and career development. We also are committed to advancing the study and practice of children’s medicine and have devoted significant resources to research and the recruitment of highly talented physician-scientists.

I invite you to learn more about how the Department of Pediatrics at Stony Brook Medicine makes a difference in the health and well-being of children. Welcome.
