November 12, 2013 – More than 200 people attended the 15th annual Alzheimer's Conference for Caregivers hosted by the department’s Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center of Long Island (ADAC-LI) at the Stony Brook Hilton Inn on November 8. Program Director, Darlene Jyringi, said that the program evaluations were uniformly positive. “Some said this was the best conference they ever attended,” she said.
The conference was attended by family members taking care of a relative with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementia and by professionals who care for patients and residents in nursing homes and care centers throughout Long Island. The program included an overview of the medical aspects of dementia by Mark Sedler, MD, the ADAC’s Medical Director; a discussion of the behavioral challenges of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s by Lori Bright-Long, Director of the department’s geriatric fellowship program; a review of ethics and choices at the end of life by Stephen Post, PhD, Director of Stony Brook Medicine’s Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care, and Bioethics; and an update on research by Ramin Parsey, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science.
The Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center of Long Island is a program of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University Hospital. It is one of nine centers - all based in hospitals or universities - sponsored by the New York State Department of Health.
