Jeffrey Hall, MD, MS Appointed Chief Resident

Chief Resident
Jeffrey Hall, MD

July 2, 2014 – Fourth-year resident Jeffrey Hall, MD, MS will serve as Chief Resident from July 1 through December 31, 2014. Residency Program Director Michael Schwartz, MD, who announced the appointment, described Dr. Hall as “a conscientious student of psychiatry who is devoted to patient care and well-being.” “He will serve as a positive role model for the other residents,” Dr. Schwartz said.

Dr. Hall grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin where his father is a board certified ophthalmologist. After earning his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Dr. Hall completed a masters program in Human Nutrition at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he worked with the New York State Psychiatric Institute’s Schizophrenia Research Unit. His master’s thesis focused on the biological mechanisms behind antipsychotic-induced weight gain.

After completing medical school at St. George’s University in Grenada, Dr. Hall chose Stony Brook for his residency. “The psychiatry program here has many strengths,” Dr. Hall said. “Residents are exposed to all kinds of patients — inpatients, outpatients, the consultation and liaison service and CPEP. By the time you finish your residency you have a solid foundation for patient care.” Stony Brook’s suburban location a train ride away from New York City was also an attraction, as was Stony Brook’s academic reputation. “Stony Brook is a great institution with a great faculty,” Dr. Hall said.

Dr. Hall described his role as Chief Resident as being a resource for the other residents. He plans to spend the early months of his tenure helping the new residents take on their responsibilities for patient care and the education of medical students. When he completes his residency, Dr. Hall hopes to complete a fellowship in addiction psychiatry before getting involved in an outpatient practice. “Over the long term, I want to help people with mental illness,” Dr. Hall said. “In the short term I want to help preserve the culture of positivity among the residents.”
