Roman Kotov, PhD
July 3, 2014 - Roman Kotov, PhD was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Psychiatry at Stony Brook University. Dean Kenneth Kaushansky, MD made the appointments based on recommendations by Department Chair, Ramin Parsey, MD, PhD and by the Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee.
In a letter of recommendation, David Watson, PhD, Professor of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame, described Dr. Kotov as “a very productive and innovative researcher who has amassed an impressive scholarly record that establishes him as a leading young investigator.” Letters from prominent scholars consistently cited Dr. Kotov’s productivity (a book, 51 articles in leading journals, 4 book chapters and more than 1,800 citations) and his ability to integrate complex statistical analyses with innovative clinical insights. Distinguished Professor Evelyn Bromet, PhD described him as “one of the brightest stars of his generation whose productivity and drive will keep our department on the world stage of psychiatry in the decades to come.”
Dr. Kotov joined the department in 2006 after completing his PhD in Psychology at the University of Iowa and an internship at Brown University. He is an investigator on several large grants. He is the principal investigator on the Suffolk County Mental Health Project, a study of recovery in psychosis over two decades; co-principal investigator (with Daniel Klein, PhD) on the ADEPT project, a study of the development of personality traits and well being in adolescent girls; a co-principal investigator with Evelyn Bromet, PhD and Benjamin Luft, MD on a study of the burden of mental-physical co-morbidities among World Trade Center responders; and a co-principal investigator with Evelyn Bromet, PhD and others on a study of smoking cessation among World Trade Center responders. In addition to his research, Dr. Kotov serves as a mentor to 4 post-doctoral fellows and numerous graduate and undergraduate students.
Department Chair, Ramin Parsey, MD, PhD characterized Dr. Kotov’s appointment as well deserved. “We are fortunate to have Dr. Kotov as a member of our faculty,” Dr. Parsey said. “He has distinguished himself as a research scientist and has bright and productive future ahead of him.
