About the 3YMD                     

 

The three-year MD program at Stony Brook University, 3YMD @ SBSOM, offers a limited number of students the opportunity to complete their medical degree in three years. Students accepted into the 3YMDprogram receive conditional acceptance into their Stony Brook School of Medicine residency program of choice.

 

 


Program Benefits

Students in the 3YMD program can expect to:

  • Save time and tuition costs by completing their MD requirements in three years
  • Develop a long term mentoring relationship in your SBSOM residency program
  • Have a direct pathway for entry into a SBSOM residency program
  • Enter the physician workforce a year early
 

 

Is the 3YMD right for you?

Students enrolled in the 3YMD program fulfill the same academic, clinical, and professional requirements as students in the LEARN Curriculum with the exception of some courses and electives occrring during Phase III. 3YMD students:

  • Spend 135 weeks in the 3YMD curriciculum compared to the 149 weeks of the LEARN Curriculum
  • Receive GME mentorship between the first and second years
  • Take four weeks of academic credit prior to the start of the first year
 

 

To Apply

The 3YMD @ SBSOM is open only to students who have already been accepted into the four year MD program. Candidates must successfully complete the 3YMD @ SBSOM application specifying their residency program of choce. Selected applications will interview with someone from their desired residency program. Acceptance into the 3YMD program includes acceptance into a SBSOM residency program, conditional on the student's acheivement of explicit academic and professional standards. Space in the 3YMD @ SBSOM program is limited and application does not guarantee acceptance. Deadline for submission of the supplemental application is 2/28/18 at Midnight.
