The Emergency Medicine Research Center (EMRC) is located within the Department of Emergency Medicine at Stony Brook University and Medical Center. It was established in order to coordinate the departmental research efforts scanning from bench to bedside.

The EMRC incorporates the personnel, expertise and resources necessary to support successful academic researchers. It includes an experienced director and associate director, and an administrative assistant who coordinates submissions to the Humans Subjects and Animal Care and Use committees as well as coordinates contracts and grants submissions. The center is also supported by three clinical research nurses and a unique Academic Associate program that utilizes undergraduate students to help identify and recruit human subjects into clinical studies. The center has its own full-time statistician, which is extremely valuable to researchers during all phases of research.

The center has received millions of dollars in research funds and has been supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense, Office of Naval Research and the Emergency Medicine Foundation. The center also conducts numerous clinical studies that are supported by Industry.

In addition to supporting the Department of Emergency Medicine’s residents and faculty, the center has assisted numerous collaborators from other departments and institutions, serving as a model for other research centers. The center offers research electives and training for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for residents and faculty. The Department of Emergency Medicine also offers a two-year New York State-funded Clinical Research Fellowship that also includes a Masters of Public Health. The research center also trains international research fellows from the Republic of Korea.
