Fellowship Experience

The Nephrology fellowship training program at Stony Brook Medicine has been in excellent standing since its foundation in 1980, with current accreditation extending through 2022.  It is a two year clinical program with options for a third year of critical care fellowship that is run in conjunction with the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care. Based on the fellow’s interest, there is an option to do a third year of post- doctoral research training as well.  The division consists of 12 full-time faculty members, each bringing with them with vast and varied experience in clinical nephrology as well as basic and translational research and medical education. As of 2018, full-time nurse practitioner support was added to the division.

Inpatient rotations are done primarily at Stony Brook University Hospital, Long Island’s premier academic medical center. With 603 beds, SBUH serves as the region’s only tertiary care center and Regional Trauma Center. Additionally, we are nationally recognized as leaders in quality health care, and have state-of-the art centers in cardiac care, oncology, digestive disorders, and neuroscience. As such, our fellows training is comprehensive with exposure to a broad range of renal pathologies. Fellows also rotate through the Northport VA Medical Center, giving them the unique experience of providing inpatient and outpatient renal care to veterans. Fellows ambulatory experience is based out of our multi-specialty outpatient clinic as well as our outpatient kidney transplant center which is run in conjunction with urology. Outpatient dialysis blocks are done at Stony Brook Kidney Center/DCI which provides ample exposure to all home dialysis modalities.

Finally, living in Suffolk County and the Stony Brook area provides a beautiful and safe environment with an abundance of nearby parks, beaches and local wineries. In the surrounding areas you will find charming villages with great housing choices, top-rated school systems, public transportation with NYC being only a train ride away.
