The Stony Brook University Neuromuscular Diseases and Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence - An ALS Association Certified Center provides comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for patients of all ages with neuromuscular disorders. Genetics and immune system disorders are thought to play a role in these conditions. Symptoms include cramps, pain, weakness, muscle wasting, numbness and difficulty moving. We are experts in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), neuropathy, myopathy, myasthenia gravis, and more. Our goal is to provide best-in-class care while decreasing symptoms, increasing mobility, and improving quality of life. We will do so in an environment of compassion and mutual respect.

Being a patient at Stony Brook University allows you access to exceptional care from a talented, experienced group of physicians, nurses and therapists from multiple specialties. Our advanced technologies help us to make a definitive diagnosis and then create the best treatment plan. These technologies include electromyography to determine the conduction of nerve impulses to the muscle, and muscle / nerve biopsy to determine what disease pathologies and genetics exist.

Patient education is an important part of our mission, and we offer frequent support groups and facilitated meetings for patients and families. Neuromuscular diseases can affect patients in a variety of ways, so we encourage open discussion and question / answer sessions. We have counselors and social workers available at all times to talk about anything.
