About the Master Educator Fellowship
The Master Educator Fellowship is a year-long program designed to allow faculty champions the opportunity to  develop evidence-based teaching skills that maximize learning in the basic science and clinical settings. Working individually and as a team, fellows will build a knowledge-base and skill-set in key areas of medical education including the science of teaching and learning, curriculum and material development and delivery, learner assessment, and educational research.

Expectations of Fellows
Fellows are expected to become part of a community of practice, sharing their experiences and working with each other to achieve success. Responsibilities include:
  • Participating in scheduled workshopsThe workshops will combine a variety of active learning strategies including micro-lectures, open discussions, group work, written exercises, skill practice, and feedback.
  • Completing assignmentsAssignments include reading articles and book chapters, watching video, completing self-assessment and reflective excercises.
  • Completing a final project. Over the course of the program, fellows are expected to design an educational intervention, program, or experience; implement it, and assess its effectiveness.
  • Sharing your experience with the greater medical education community by submitting an article for publication, poster presentation or conference session, conducting a grand round or workshop.

Master Educator Certification
To earn their certificate, fellows are expected to complete a project related to medical education. Selected mentors will be available to assist the fellow with selecting an appropriate project--one that has the potential to impact medical education at Stony Brook and is achievable given the fellow's experience and time constraints. Final projects may be used as part of the Academy of Clinical and Educational Scholars (ACES) application.
