Fellow Life

Hand Fellows at Stony Brook University Hospital have Faculty appointment and are considered Clinical Assistant Instructors. Various responsibilities are included with this position. Fellows have an opportunity to influence weekly didactic sessions for the residents and attendings alike. Each month the fellows select timely journal club articles and interesting cases for radiology conferences. In addition to participating in formal didactic sessions, fellows oversee clinical care and patient management in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Once a week, fellows serve in a hand clinic for uninsured and underinsured patients. There is an opportunity to participate in quality improvement projects and committee meetings throughout the year. On a day to day basis work remains predominantly clinical. When not in the operating room, diagnostic and clinical exam skills are honed in the ambulatory setting. It is routine to perform both ultrasound and x-ray guided injections for various upper extremity pathologies. Fellows split call at a level one trauma, replantation center in Suffolk County. Much autonomy is given to the fellow to manage this schedule. Call is predominantly from home, with junior level residents remaining in house for primary call. A microsurgical skills labs is available 24/7. There is support for basic science and clinical research including microsurgery skills with clinical and animal models. 

When not at work, fellows can spend free time in a variety of ways on Long Island. The Long Island Rail Road provides a short train ride to New York City. During the summertime, there are beautiful beaches only a short drive away. Throughout the fall, a quick drive to the the North Fork offers various outdoor activities including parks, farms, vineyards and orchards. In the winter months, wonderful east coast ski resorts are only a ferry ride and drive away. In short, the SBUH Hand Fellowship offers a training experience that can enrich both professional and personal life over the short span of twelve months.
