Stony Brook Medicine is the premier medical research institution in Suffolk County and is a central component of Stony Brook University, one of the nation's leading public research universities. Members of our department serve as national and international leaders in both basic and translational research, bridging the gap from bench to bedside research, with the goal of improving the effectiveness of clinical diagnosis and patient care. Our research programs are externally supported by grants from numerous sources, including the National Institutes of Health, the American Cancer Society, NASA, the New York State Department of Health (NYSTEM), the biotechnology industry, and private foundations. Some of the current areas of investigation include the molecular regulation of cell motility, invasion, and metastasis; interactions of bacterial pathogens with host cells of innate immunity; miRNA transcriptional regulation of oncogene expression; genomic instability in cancer; the molecular pathogenesis of acute leukemia, stem cell therapy and tissue repair, Leukocyte chemotaxis, inflammation, and pulmonary immunopathology; and the discovery and validation of cervical and breast cancer biomarkers.  Discovery and validation of    prognostic and predictive biomarkers in cancer.
