Joanna Chikwe, MD — Academic Profile

Dr. Joanna Chikwe specializes in minimally invasive valve surgery, with specific expertise in mitral valve repair, aortic surgery, and coronary revascularization. She serves as chief of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Division at Stony Brook Medicine, and director of the Stony Brook Heart Institute, leading a multidisciplinary team that works closely with cardiologists and vascular surgeons to provide comprehensive longitudinal evaluation and the full spectrum of surgical and transcatheter treatment options to patients with structural and ischemic heart disease.

Dr. Chikwe received her MD from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. She completed her residency in general surgery and a master's degree at the University of Cambridge, followed by cardiothoracic surgery training in London and New York, where she was appointed to the faculty at Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2008 and served as program director of the thoracic surgery residency program, and chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai St. Luke's Hospitals.

Dr. Chikwe leads active research collaborations with the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery and the Department of Population Health Science and Policy at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, publishing on clinical outcomes in cardiovascular surgery including landmark articles in JAMA and Journal of the American College of Cardiology. She also is editor/author of three clinical handbooks, including Cardiothoracic Surgery, published by Oxford University Press, and reissued in multiple editions.
