Pulmonary Medicine Subspecialty Care

The following subspecialty care centers are available at Stony Brook University Hospital:

Sleep Disorders Center
Established in 1979, the Sleep Disorders Center in Smithtown, NY offers services in a quiet, private setting using state-of-the-art equipment. The Sleep Disorders Center is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, providing a full range of diagnostic and treatment services to patients of all ages, including infants with sleep-related symptoms. The medical staff consists of nationally recognized physicians who are credentialed in Sleep Medicine with expertise in a variety of specialties to provide advanced care to patients with sleep disorders.

Asthma Center
Training at the Asthma Center at Stony Brook allows for the fellow to develop an expertise in comprehensive asthma diagnostic testing and outpatient management including advanced biologic therapies. Coupled with a robust education program in pulmonary physiology, pulmonary function and  Cardiopulmonary exercise test interpretation through the three years of fellowship, training in disorders of obstructive airways and related physiology is comphrehensive. Dr. Ewa Rakowski leads the outpatient asthma practice and related educational programs.

Pulmonary Hypertension Center 
The Pulmonary Hypertension Center is co-directed by Dr. Paul Strachan and Dr. Jignesh Patel, where an interdisciplinary and multifaceted approach to diagnosing and managing patients with Pulmonary Hypertension takes place, including evaluation of the patient by Right Heart Catheterization, Cardio-pulmonary exercise testing and 6-minute walk.

Center for Interstitial Lung Diseases
The Stony Brook Center for ILD is a nationally recognized center and part of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation's Care Center Network. We provide comprehensive diagnosis and management of patients with ILD and run the Suffolk County Pulmonary Fibrosis Support Group for patients and their families. Our center functions together with the Departments of Radiology, Pathology, Rheumatology and Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Alpa G. Desai is the Director, and Dr. Nadia Hasaneen is the Associate Director of this Center.

Lung Cancer Evaluation Center
Fellows will rotate in the Lung Center Evaluation Clinic (LCEC) and participate in initital diagnosis, follow-up and management of lung cancer and pulmonary nodules. During their interventional bronchoscopy rortations, fellows will perform basic and advanced bronchoscopy techniques, including:

  • Inspection bronchoscopy, Bronchial alveolar lavage, Transbronchial biopsy
  • Wang needle Lymph Node biopsy of mediastinal LN
  • Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS)
  • Navigational Bronchoscopy
  • Cryoablation, Argon Laser Ablation, Endobronchial Valve Replacement
  • Tracheal stenting
  • Rigid bronchoscopy
  • Bronchial Thermoplasty
  • Pleuroscopy, Pleural biopsy, Indwelling Pleural catheter placement
