Recruitment for a research study like PIGMENT involves more than one step. The first step is to speak to you over the phone (or Facetime, Microsoft Teams, or whatever method you prefer). We would ask you a few basic questions to see if you are eligible and answer any questions or concerns you might have. The next step is to invite you to the 10th floor of the Stony Brook University Health Science Center (HSC) for the first study visit. We have several private offices and interview rooms to ensure that you have privacy during your participation in our study.
The First Study Visit
- Consent and Assent: This is a standard part of research to inform you about all parts of the study, including risks, benefits, and compensation. We can answer any questions that you have about the study. Both Teen and Parent must attend in person.
- The teen will be asked to complete a private and confidential mental health interview, as well as private and confidential surveys about their feelings, opinions, experiences, and values.
- The parent will be asked to complete private and confidential information about themselves and teen.
- The teen will be asked to complete an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) at the Social, Cognitive, and Affective Neuroscience (SCAN) Center (MRI) at Stony Brook University. The SCAN Center is within walking distance (5-10 min) of the Health Science Center.
- We will compensate you for your time. The teen will be compensated $200.00 if they complete all parts of the study, plus any money they win during the MRI. The parent will be compensated $40.00 if they complete all parts of the study, plus we will validate parking.
After the First Study Visit
- After about 18 months, we will invite you and your teen to complete another study visit, including MRI. This visit will be compensated like the first study visit.
- After another 18 months, we will invite your teen to complete a third (and final!) study visit, including MRI. This visit will be compensated like the first study visit.
- After each study visit, the teen will be asked by email to complete a survey every 90 days. This survey can be completed from home. We will additionally compensate your teen for completion of these surveys.
