Our specially-trained pediatric surgeons provide general and specialized surgical services to infants, children, and adolescents who have a wide range of congenital and acquired conditions. Our surgeons meet all the rigorous standards — to the highest degree — of the American Academy of Pediatrics, as defined in its official policy statement.
We perform both conventional "open" operations and minimally invasive procedures using the latest technology. With the minimally invasive approach, our young patients experience smaller scars, reduced pain, and have an earlier return to normal diet. Best of all, hospital stays are generally shorter and children return to family, friends, and activities sooner.
With more than 3,000 outpatient visits and more than 1,000 surgeries annually, we have the largest pediatric surgery program in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. In addition, we coordinate the Pediatric Trauma Service, which sees more than 300 admissions a year. And to help keep kids safe and out of the emergency room, we take part in Stony Brook’s special efforts to educate the community on injury prevention.
The inpatient facilities available to our Pediatric Surgery Service include the only pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) on Suffolk County's north shore. We work closely with the pediatric critical care team to provide the most sophisticated care to critically injured children admitted to the PICU. And we also help coordinate all the other care needed to help injured children recover as fully as possible.
To ensure a good hospital experience for children and their families, we provide orientation tours and teach the children and their families about their operations, so that they feel comfortable about them. The Child Life Program offers an online pre-surgical tour for children and their families to give patients who are scheduled for surgery a chance to see and know what to expect.
