The Division of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at Stony Brook Medicine offers a one-year ACGME accredited Fellowship in Emergency Medical Services. The fellowship accepts up to two fellows per year.
Stony Brook Medicine EMS is responsible for providing a range of pre-hospital and interfacility EMS services, including 911 response, ALS interfacility transports, critical care transports and air medical services. The 911 response includes two ALS first responders on the North Fork of Long Island, three 911 ambulances that provide assistance to local EMS services and two mobile stroke units. Stony Brook University Medical Center (SBUMC) EMS paramedics staff the Suffolk County medevac helicopters located in the east and west portions of the county. The east base is staffed 16 hours a day and the west base is staffed 24 hours a day. The paramedics provide medical care on the Suffolk County Police Department’s four aircraft (2 EC-145 and 2 AStars). SBUMC EMS also provides medical control for all 911 agencies in Suffolk County.
The EMS division also provides medical direction for a number of 911 EMS agencies in Suffolk County including both Fire Department and Volunteer Ambulance Corps. EMS physicians in the division are active in the Suffolk County Regional Emergency Medical Advisory Committee and EMS medical oversight throughout the county. Overall, Suffolk County has a population of roughly 1.5 million, covering 914 square miles. Emergency medical response is provided by 69 volunteer fire departments and 27 volunteer community ambulance corps. Combined these services average over 150,000 encounters per year.
EMS Fellows at Stony Brook will receive education within both the Stony Brook University EMS system, which provides critical care transport services and medevac services, as well as regional ALS 911 response in a variety of geographic areas in Suffolk County and the Suffolk County EMS system, which provides a hybrid of paid and volunteer town-based 911 response to a county of 1.5 million people. Clinically, the fellow will have the opportunity to serve a Flight Physician with SCPD Medevac, perform critical care transports with SBUMC and respond to ground 911 calls. The fellow will also serve as an Assistant Medical Director at a number of local EMS agencies, including both fire and volunteer ambulance corps.
EMS faculty are currently active in research and the division has the support of extensive research expertise within the Department of Emergency Medicine. In addition, the Department of Emergency Medicine has fellowships in International Emergency Medicine, Ultrasound, Advanced Resuscitation Training and ED Administration. We have worked with these programs on a number of research projects and education opportunities, including pre-hospital ultrasound and development of a conference in St. Lucia.
