The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery comprises our clinical faculty of board-certified plastic surgeons and their support staff dedicated to our mission of excellence in the care of patients requiring plastic and reconstructive surgery; the education of medical students and surgical residents in the art of plastic and reconstructive surgery; the performance of basic and translational research aimed at advancing both reconstructive and cosmetic procedures; and community service, including local health fairs and global medical missions.

The Division’s faculty has been recognized for its clinical excellence by selection for inclusion in the present and past editions of the Castle Connolly Guides, America’s Top Doctors, representing the top 1% of physicians in the nation; and Top Doctors: New York Metro Area. In addition, the faculty has been selected for inclusion in the Consumers' Research Council of America Guide to America's Top Plastic Surgeons.

Stony Brook’s Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Center, located in East Setauket, serves as the main outpatient office for our surgeons. Many cosmetic procedures are performed there, as well as at our Bellavie MedSpa. Our Smithtown Office provides another outpatient facility. And our Ambulatory Surgery Center and University Hospital, on Stony Brook University Campus, enable our surgeons to perform a full range of plastic and reconstructive procedures.

As for reconstructive surgery, the Division’s faculty distinguished itself by performing, in 2005, what is believed to be the first simultaneous reattachment of hands done in New York State, making national news. And our surgeons continue to make headlines with pioneering operations to reattach severed limbs, and also to achieve thumb reconstruction using microvascular toe transfer (“toe-to-thumb” transplants).

Education

The Division’s faculty plays an important role in the education of our medical students and general surgery residents, as well as plastic surgery residents of Nassau University Medical Center who rotate at Stony Brook. With regard to research, the Division also provides patients with the opportunity to participate in clinical trials that offer them the only local access to newly developed treatment options. Basic science research is done, as well, with the ultimate aim of improving patient care.

Together, the clinical and academic strengths of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery form the foundation of our continued success in achieving the excellence expected of us in our diverse programs of patient care, education, research, and community service.
