<P><B><BIG>INTRODUCING DR. JOHN M. COSGROVE, OUR NEW GENERAL SURGEON</BIG></B></P>

<P>STONY BROOK, NY, May 23, 2016 — We are very pleased to introduce <a href="/surgery/people/faculty/dr-john-m-cosgrove">John M. Cosgrove, MD</a>, who joins our faculty as professor of surgery in our <a href="/surgery/divisions/general-surgery">Bariatrics, Foregut, and Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgery Division</a>.</P>

<P>Dr. Cosgrove maintains his practice in general/gastrointestinal surgery in Greenport, NY, and provides his surgical services there at <a href="http://www.elih.org/HOME/tabid/842/Default.aspx">Eastern Long Island Hospital</a> (ELIH).</P>

<P>Dr. Cosgrove specializes in the management of abdomen and digestion disorders and in minimally invasive endoscopic procedures, with clinical concentration on anti-reflux procedures, appendectomy, colonoscopy, feeding tubes, gastric tube, gastrostomy, and hepatobiliary surgery.</P>

<P>Practicing since the 1980s, Dr. Cosgrove has had a distinguished career as an academic surgeon with several previous leadership positions, including, most recently, professor and chairman of surgery at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, the primary teaching hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine. At Albert Einstein, he also served as residency program director.</P>

<P>Prior to his position at Albert Einstein, Dr. Cosgrove was chief of surgery at North Shore University Hospital (Forest Hills).</P>

<P>In 2013, Dr. Cosgrove joined ELIH, where he serves as chief of surgery as well as vice president of the medical staff. His leadership there will play a prominent role in Stony Brook Medicine's future relationship with this top-rated community hospital.</P>

<P>Recognized for the delivery of consistently high-quality care, ELIH earned national status of "Top 10% in the Country" and "Best" on Long Island as reported in the <I>New York Times</I>.</P>

<P>In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Cosgrove is an active scholar with over 50 peer-reviewed publications to his credit, plus several book chapters and his book, <I>Minimally Invasive Surgery: Principles and Outcomes</I> (Harwood Academic;
<a href="http://www.amazon.ca/Minimally-Invasive-Surgery-Principles-Outcomes/dp/…; target="_blank">see preview</a>).</P>

<P>Dr. Cosgrove has received numerous honors during his career as both clinician and teacher, including selection for the Castle Connolly Guide, <I>Top Doctors: New York Metro Area</I>.</P>

<P>A Harvard graduate, Dr. Cosgrove earned his MD at New York Medical College in 1983, and did his residency training in surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, in Mt. Sinai College of Medicine's program there.</P>

<P>As a senior member of our faculty, Dr. Cosgrove will certainly contribute much to our expanding practice, as well as to our educational programs.</P>
