STONY BROOK, NY, November 26, 2014 — Former patient, 4-year-old Bobby Volk, who came through the Pediatric Emergency Department at Stony Brook Children's Hospital in September and needed emergency surgery, presented a giant check to Richard J. Scriven, MD, of our Pediatric Surgery Division, today in the lobby of Stony Brook Medicine.

Weeks after a successful surgery and very positive experience at Stony Brook Children's, Bobby was watching a television show and the episode was about a bake sale. He asked his mother if he could have a bake sale. After questioning him, he said he wanted to have one for Dr. Scriven, his team, and all the other children at Stony Brook, stating that "they need stuff."

Boy says "they need stuff" at Stony Brook Children's, and does his part!

Bobby and his mom Andrea baked cookies and brownies. Then Bobby packed up his wagon, and sold the goodies to people at his mother's job. In the end, Bobby raised almost $300!

Bobby, along with his parents, joined Dr. Scriven and members of Stony Brook Medicine to show their gratitude to the hospital, and presented a check that will be contributed to the Childrens Hospital and the Child Life Services.

Dr. Scriven had performed emergency surgery on Bobby for a testicular torsion, a condition not typically seen in a 4-year-old (it usually occurs in boys 10 and older). Dr. Scriven and his team even went above and beyond by pulling Bobby around in a wagon complete with stuffed furry friends to ease his fears.

Our Pediatric Surgery Division was established in 1982. Now, with more than 3,000 outpatient visits and more than 1,000 surgeries annually, we have the largest pediatric surgery program in Suffolk County.

Established in June 2010, Stony Brook Children's Hospital is Suffolk County's only children's hospital. More than 8,500 children and adolescents are admitted each year. Stony Brook Children's operates 106 pediatric beds and has more than 200 full-time and voluntary pediatric physicians and surgeons in 33 different specialties.
