Program Overview & Application Process

Stony Brook Medicine offers an integrated three-year podiatric surgery residency with the Northport VA Medical Center fully accredited by the Council of Podiatric Medical Education through 2020. Our training program is designed to prepare physicians for the pursuit of an academic career in podiatric surgery as well as for private practice in podiatric surgery.

Residents are chosen out of podiatric medical school and enter the three-year program, which culminates in eligibility for certification in podiatric surgery. Currently, the programs accepts three residents per year.

Residents spend the majority of their time at Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Ambulatory Surgical center, and the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center. These locations are the main hubs of the residency program. Additionally, residents will scrub surgical cases at Long Island Community Hospital, Stony Brook South Hampton, and North Shore Surgi-Center.

Dr. Wendy Young, DPM FACFAS is the residency program director and oversees all aspects of the podiatric medical education curriculum. Academics are also a core component of the program, with journal club, case presentations, and surgical anatomy labs being held often each month. Residents will work with a number of attendings who have decades of experience in surgical and clinical podiatry.
