Welcome Dr. Ashley Mathew
Dr. Mathew graduated summa cum laude with a BS in Biology and minor in Psychology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She then matriculated into the 7 year BS/MD program with Albany Medical College. Among other activities, she was participated in Project SOAR (Successfully Overcoming Adversity with the help of Role Models), a program that mentored inner city youth. Following graduation with an MD from Albany, she came to Stony Brook as a Resident. In her final year, she served as Chief Resident for Medical Student Education. During her residency, she helped develop and implement a quality improvement project to study airway management preparedness during urgent and emergent floor intubations. She presented nine case reports at national meetings. This past year, Dr. Mathew did a Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship at Children’s National Medical Center, Washington, DC. There, she developed and implemented a quality improvement project to study and improve intraoperative hand-offs. We are delighted to have Dr. Mathew return to Stony Brook. Welcome back! |

Dr. Pentyala: Stony Brook Champion!
James P. Dilger, PhD Dr. Srinivas Pentyala, who has been a faculty member in our Department since 1992, received not one, but two awards at the Inaugural Stony Awards Celebration! I was honored to nominate Srini for the SB YOU Award . This award honors Stony Brook employees who "exemplify SBU’s five pillars: Innovation, Community, Equity, Excellence and Collaboration". They should also "inspire the positive behaviors and beliefs that embody the mission and values of Stony Brook" and give their "time and abilities to go above and beyond general job requirements". Srini fits these criteria to the utmost. His research accomplishments have been mainly focused on exploring ways to translate lab bench findings into assays and devices that aid patients. He is well known his nationally successful SARAS program that introduces high school students and undergraduates to basic and clinical science through lectures and workshops. And, Srini's collaborative efforts can be seen by this multiple joint appointments at Stony Brook (Physiology and Biophysics, Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, Urology, Health Sciences).

Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit
Joy Schabel, MD The Department of Anesthesiology and Stony Brook Medical Center partnered with the American Medical Association in their shared commitment to dismantling structural racism and increasing diversity in the physician workforce. Members of the Department of Anesthesiology participated in the inaugural Stony Brook “Black Men in White Coats” Youth Summit. Over 500 youth from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine attended the event. Black Men in White Coats is an AMA-created documentary that inspires to increase the number of Black men in the field of medicine. During the summit, participants examined the structural barriers to increasing diversity in medicine from the perspectives of Black men who are both physicians and leaders in medicine.

Pediatric Trauma Level I ACS Reverification
Ron Jasiewicz, MD After a two-day visit by the American College of Surgeons verification review team, we have successfully achieved (pending formal sign-off) another 3-year status as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. At the summation meeting, the reviewers presented that there were no deficiencies, although some areas of opportunity as we move forward in providing care to the residents of Suffolk County and others. The team stated they were impressed with our process improvement program, and clinical care guidelines since we commenced our Level I status six years ago. It's a department team effort for where we are today. On behalf of the Pediatric Trauma program, thank you. |

PGA 2023 Presentations

AHA Meeting Abstract
Jonathon Schwartz, MD An abstract was presented at the AHA Scientific Sessions 2023 in Philadelphia. Resident Dr. Daniel Mattimore and I were the authors from our department. Dr. AlSadawi was a cardiology fellow here at the time and has since moved to the University of Michigan for further fellowship training. Drs. Singh and Kalogeropoulos are faculty in the SBU cardiology department.

Déjà Vu at the SfN Meeting
Grigori Enikolopov, PhD Last month, I was at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in DC, with over 25,000 participants. To my surprise, I stumbled upon a banner featuring our image of neural stem cells (a strip of blue dots) that was recently featured on the cover of Journal of Neuroscience. I then saw more and more of those, until realizing that there are three or four different images that rotate all the time on the banners and posters throughout the meeting venue, so every couple of minutes I had a surreal (and slightly disconcerting) experience of being surrounded by the same neural stem cell image that we created many years ago and which we’ve sent as a journal cover this summer.

John Fazio, CRNA and his band rocked the house with their music during a benefit for Eastern Long Island Hospital! The band included Andy Jepson (bass), and two colleagues from the Emergency Department at ELIH: Drs. Larry Schiff (drums) and Ryan Zapata (lead guitar). John sang vocals and played keyboard.
