CYTOPATHOLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2025 (1) POSITION

This one-year advanced training in cytopathology is designed to provide comprehensive training in cytopathology. The program has a growing ultrasound (US)-guided FNA clinic that is operated by cytopathologists. The fellow will have hands-on experience in performing both palpation- and US-guided FNAs, and in providing rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) of samples prepared from US-, CT-, EUS- and EBUS-guided FNAs and core biopsies. Fellows will become familiar with triaging specimens for appropriate ancillary tests and in utilizing telecytopathology for ROSE. They will receive practical training in laboratory management and quality control/assurance. The fellows will participate in a number of clinical and educational activities: performing FNAs, in-hospital service and daily sign out, multidisciplinary tumor board conferences, and teaching pathology residents, cytotechnologists, and medical students. As members of a research-intensive academic department, the fellows will also have the opportunity to pursue academic interests in basic or translational research, to present their work at national meetings and to submit research manuscripts for publication in leading academic journals.

Requirements: Candidates must be Board certified or eligible for certification in AP or AP/CP and must be eligible for a license to practice in the state of New York.

Stipends: Commensurate with the level of training.

HEMATOPATHOLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Currently accepting applications for 2025 (1) position

One fellowship position that has ACGME-accreditation offers experience in hematopathology, emphasizing diagnostic hematopathology and laboratory hematology. Two board-certified hematopathologists are enthusiastically engaged in teaching the trainee in all areas of hematopathology, including exposure to a very active bone marrow transplantation service. The program includes training in peripheral blood and bone marrow morphology interpretation, lymph node pathology, laboratory pathology, coagulation, flow cytometry, cytogenetics and molecular pathology. The trainee will have the opportunity to teach residents and medical students as well as to participate in translational research.

SELECTIVE PATHOLOGY (SURGICAL PATHOLOGY) FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Two ACGME-accredited one-year fellowship positions that will provide an intensive experience in general surgical pathology and subspecialties, including breast, GYN, GI, pulmonary, renal, head and neck, placental pathology, dermatopathology and neuropathology, supervised by dedicated and expert faculty. The service includes approximately 28,000 cases per year and encompasses a wide variety of organ systems and subspecialties, drawn from a major tertiary care medical center. The fellows are involved in the preview and sign-out of cases, performance and interpretation of frozen sections, and supervision of the gross room, and have unprecedented opportunities to participate in translational research. The fellows are greatly encouraged, though not required, to complete a research project during their fellowship and present the findings at a major conference. The fellows will become familiar with the innovative use of technology to improve workflow, and the significance of quality assurance and improvement within surgical pathology. The fellows also take part in teaching residents and medical students and present at clinical conferences.

BMI FELLOWSHIP IN CLINICAL INFORMATICS: OVERVIEW

The Stony Brook Fellowship in Clinical Informatics is a 2-year program open to physicians who are ABMS board certified or board eligible in a primary specialty. The CI Fellowship is offered through Stony Brook Medicine’s Pathology Department; it is open to eligible candidates from any medical specialty(e.g. Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, Pathology, Pediatrics, Surgery, Radiology etc.)

Our program offers an environment of interdisciplinary collaboration between clinicians, clinical informaticians, clinical data scientists, pathology and radiology informaticians and machine learning experts. It is the ideal program for motivated physicians seeking in-depth expertise in clinical informatics along with applications of clinical data analytics and machine learning to the field of healthcare.

Stony Brook University Hospital, a 603 bed tertiary care center and a premier academic medical center serves as the primary clinical site for the fellows. It has been nominated as one of the nation’s Most-Wired hospitals for 7 consecutive years and is constantly at the forefront of implementing innovative IT solutions to clinical problems.

Stony Brook University, one of the top 1% universities in the world, is home to the Biomedical informatics department ( BMI) and it’s richly talented faculty. The didactic portion of the fellowship will be supported by the curriculum of the BMI Masters in Clinical Informatics.  The university also offers opportunities to interact and collaborate with experts from a wide variety of fields.
